Interview with a Red Sox fan and a Yankee Fan

Imagine if you will, a reputable sports reporter interviewing a Yankee fan and a Red Sox fan. This is how I think it would go.

Yankees Fan

Interviewer: There was a lot of doubt this off-season about the Yankees success with so many changes, yet they are off to a great start. What do you think are the major reason?
Yankees Fan: Like many other successful clubs, the Yankees have been able to get strong run support when needed, timely hitting from several sources and above all - the thing that wins games - their pitching staff has done a tremendous job.

Interviewer: So the change in key personnel, Tino, Paul, Chuck, Scott, hasn’t really had an impact.
Yankees Fan: I think to the fans it has, we all loved those guys, but the Yankees, as an organization, are able to put together a strong squad every year.

Interviewer: One of your division rivals, the Red Sox, are playing great ball, does that worry you.
Yankees Fan: Sure it does. They are a strong club with great athletes, new ownership and a new attitude. The Red Sox have always played us well and with 17 meetings this year, we really need to make sure we try to win some of them.

Interviewer: What is it like to be a Yankee fan, to root for one of the most successful clubs in the world?
Yankees Fan: Oh, it’s a lot of fun. We have had some bad years, like in the late 80’s and early 90’s, so it’s fun to enjoy the success.

Interviewer: How long do you think the success can last?
Yankees Fan: Yankees ownership has done a great job to build a strong farm system and make sure the franchise lives up to its reputation. Luckily, we are able to pay the salaries needed for good players to remain competitive.

Interviewer: Thank you for your time and for buying lunch during this interview. Good luck with the season.
Yankees Fan: Thank you, it’s been a lot of fun doing this interview. Have a great day. God Bless and be well.

RED SOX FAN

Interviewer: The Red Sox are off to a great start this season. What do you think are the major factors contributing to the team’s success?
Red Sox Fan: YANKEES SUCK!!!

Interviewer: I see. Lowe has been a big surprise, what else has surprised you so far this year?
Red Sox Fan: YANKEES SUCK!!!

Interviewer: Very good. Super! What player do you think is making the biggest impact on this squad?
Red Sox Fan: NOMAAHHH!! JETER SUCKS!!!

Interviewer: It’s still fairly early in the season, what do the Red Sox have to do to make it to the post season?
Red Sox Fan: YANKEES SUCK!!!

Interviewer: Yeah, you said that. There were a lot of changes during the off-season. New ownership, new coaching staff, they got rid of Everett and added some key players, what has made the biggest difference.
Red Sox Fan: I like ice cream.

Interviewer: What?
Red Sox Fan: Never mind.

Interviewer: You. Are. An. Idiot.
Red Sox Fan: YANKEES SUCK!!

Interviewer: Could you please stop saying that?
Red Sox Fan: Huh? Say what?

Interviewer: Ok, let’s get back to the Red Sox. Fenway is a piece of history but it has some problems. Would you like to see a new park built?
Red Sox Fan: OVAH MY DEAD BOODY I WOULD!! NEVAAAAHHHH!

Interviewer: Well put! What do you say to the critics that say the Sox are doing well because they have had a weak schedule?
Red Sox Fan: THEY CAN KISS MY ASS!!

Interviewer: You really are an idiot.
Red Sox Fan: YANKEES SUCK!!

Interviewer: Do I smell alcohol on your breath?
Red Sox Fan: Uh huh, there’s a game tonight.

Interviewer: It’s only 9 in the morning.
Red Sox Fan: Yeah?

Interviewer: Social and cultural aspects affect the success or detriment of any organization, especially a ball club. Any thoughts on that?
Red Sox Fan: I…er….uh…I saw Star Wars. It was good. Also, I like cartoons.

Interviewer: That’s what I thought.
Red Sox Fan: YANKEES SUCK!!!

Interviewer: I am going to walk away real slowly. Don’t hurt me.
Red Sox Fan: Yellow is pretty.

Interviewer: Good God.
Red Sox Fan: YANKEES SUCK!!!

Interviewer: Did you get out of elementary school?
Red Sox Fan: Homer Simpson is funny.

Interviewer: I hate you.
Red Sox Fan: Can I have a dollar?

I am back

Just letting my readers (said with a very sarcastic tone) know I am back. The gnomes lose once again.

May 27, 2002

It's been a while

The evil gnomes that live inside my computer won't allow me to post under my own name, so I had to play a ruse and sign in as a guest. I haven’t posted in a while because I have a new born that takes up ALL of my time, and my laptop had a major meltdown.

As soon as I can get things back in order, I will start posting again. The voices in my head are usually quelled by writing and I need to get back to it. There is so much to say. Must fight urge to write bad things about the Sox. Be. Strong.

Emily's "Firsts"

Everyone we know who have children between infancy to about 3 years kept telling us how great the “firsts” would be. They were not wrong and we have started experiencing them already. For example, the other day Emily learned how to pee during the brief moment we have her diaper off. And it was the other morning Emily learned how to throw up on daddy’s dress pants right before he was heading to work. And just the other night, right before we were hoping to wind down for the day, our little Emily discovered she had lungs and could scream for hours and hours for no apparent reason. The “firsts”, they are so nice.

Emily’s Baptism

I wanted to post a quick update that Emily’s Baptism will be on August 11, 2002 at 10:15 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hicksville, NY.

House of cards

So far, Emily has proven to be unpredictable. If you are a parent, I am sure this does not come as a surprise. But after reading a number of books on infants, I was expecting a blissful existence of one hour feeding, a diaper change, a few minutes of “play” time followed by 3 hours of solid sleep. Simple, right? Wrong. Sometimes Emily wants to fuss, sometimes she just wants to be held differently, sometimes she wants to listen to Pink Floyd while her daddy sings to her and other times she just wants to squirm. And then, after we think she has fallen asleep in one of our arms, we put her in the bassinet and walk away from our “house of cards”, hoping a butterfly doesn’t land in China and knock it all down. It is so nice when we realize she is actually asleep so we can 1) take a nap, 2) eat, 3) take a nap. Infants, they are funny things.

Update for Emily

Now that things have calmed down a bit and Patti and I have had a chance to catch our collective breaths, I wanted to send a quick update. First, things are much, much more enjoyable than the first 48 hours after we got home. Patti has been wonderfully patient with both Emily and me and has taught us both how to do this baby thing. Emily has figured out the art of feeding from the faucets and is doing great. The two biggest lessons learned from this so far are 1) no matter what anyone tells you, nothing can prepare you for the loss of sleep. It is brutal. And 2) newborns are so soft they almost feel fake. Their hair, skin and body are so soft and sweet it is amazing. At this stage of their life, it boils down to four things – eating, pooping, crying and sleeping. It is nothing more than that. But every now and then, Emily shows signs that she understands us and that is when my heart melts. To have her fall asleep on my chest after being fussy for the past hour, well, nothing can beat that. It is truly a gift for us. Let’s just hope she keeps this up when the boys start calling about 16 years from now. Ok. That is it for now. More updates to follow.

Thanks for the nice words

Thanks for the congrats and emails/calls regarding the baby. It's been very difficult so far but we are managing. I wish we had a couple of more days in the hospital, but what can you do, the HMOs have more lawyers than new mothers.
