Update for Emily

Now that things have calmed down a bit and Patti and I have had a chance to catch our collective breaths, I wanted to send a quick update. First, things are much, much more enjoyable than the first 48 hours after we got home. Patti has been wonderfully patient with both Emily and me and has taught us both how to do this baby thing. Emily has figured out the art of feeding from the faucets and is doing great. The two biggest lessons learned from this so far are 1) no matter what anyone tells you, nothing can prepare you for the loss of sleep. It is brutal. And 2) newborns are so soft they almost feel fake. Their hair, skin and body are so soft and sweet it is amazing. At this stage of their life, it boils down to four things – eating, pooping, crying and sleeping. It is nothing more than that. But every now and then, Emily shows signs that she understands us and that is when my heart melts. To have her fall asleep on my chest after being fussy for the past hour, well, nothing can beat that. It is truly a gift for us. Let’s just hope she keeps this up when the boys start calling about 16 years from now. Ok. That is it for now. More updates to follow.

You have only begun to experience the joys of parenting. There will be multitudes of memorable moments that you will cherish forever. I would like to prepare you for a few possibilities:

Grade School
8:00 am "by the way it's my turn to bring treats today!"

Middle School
"Could you help me with my Science Fair Project, it's due tomorrow!"

High School
"I met this really nice boy today, he asked if I could go with him to watch the submarine race tonight?"

I wish the both of you all the best in the years to come. Enjoy those precious years, they go by fast. As you know my baby girl graduates from college Saturday. It seemed like only yesterday she was sleeping on my chest.
