Emily's fall down the stairs
Emily took a tumble down the stairs today. I don’t mean to make light of it but to be honest, I knew it was going to happen sooner or later. A friend from work told me of how his daughter, when she was like 2 years old, took a step off the second floor hallway of his house like she was walking across the room. He didn’t have the gate up and she just took a step off and fell down the stairs. They took her to the emergency room and she was fine but he told me this when we first had Emily and, well, knowing how kids are, I was waiting for something to happen.
Emily’s trip wasn’t bad at all. This morning we were all upstairs getting ready for the movies. A theater nearby has a movie every Saturday morning at 10AM, some ‘G’ rated cartoon or something, today it was My Little Pony crap, for 3.50 a person. So I was going to take Emily while Patti and Ethan hung back at the ranch. After we got dressed, Emily headed down the stairs so her and I could get our coats and leave. About halfway down she tripped over her own feet and fell down on one of the stairs. She was holding on to the handrail, like she always does, but lost her grip. She ended up sliding down about 6 or 7 steps on her back, head first, to the first floor. She slid down pretty slow. Patti, I and Ethan were all at the top of the steps and saw the whole thing. Patti yelled “Oh God” and I went down to get her. She cried for a couple of minutes but it really wasn’t a bad fall. She slid with her body pretty rigid, instead of tumbling head over heals, and she slowly ended up on the floor, kind of like a slide at a toddler playground. I checked her out, got her tears dried and went on to the movies like nothing happened.
I hate to admit this but it was kind of funny. When she was sliding down she had a look of confusion and not horror, she didn’t seem like she was scared. She was more shocked than anything else. And if the stairs were padded, she would have probably tried this maneuver on her own as some kind of game.
So there it is. Documentation of Emily’s first and hopefully but not likely last tumble down the stairs.
Good night and be well.
