New England Patriots...lose?
Let me first say that I wanted the Patriots to win. I really did. Living in Boston while the Patriots have been so successful has been fun. They are a team that is very similar to how I like to see the game played – play hard and keep their mouths shut, don’t over pay for someone, no one is flashy but they keep winning, they play with class – and it’s fun being around here while they have been so good. Probably a lot like it was when the Celtics were winning. But I had the opportunity to be around almost all of last week. I listened to the radio, I read the papers, watched the TV sports shows. And you know what? No one, other than one WEEI morning radio host, gave Denver a chance. No one.
I remember in 2001 when the Patriots beat the St. Louis Rams in the Super Bowl. Even leading up to that, the Patriots beat a very good Steelers team in Pittsburgh to make it to the Super Bowl. After both of those games, all we heard from the losing teams was “The better team did not win.” I remember Big Jay getting so angry when this was said. That statement is one of the dumbest things that can be said. It’s a losing argument. The better team always wins, that is why they play a game with a winner and a loser.
So all I heard this week were local yahoos, fans and media, talking about how the Broncos stood no chance at all. Well, they won. And my buddy Jay was one of those that probably felt that this post season should just be shut down and the trophy Fed Ex-ed to Boston, avoiding a trip to Detroit all together. The Patriots were, well, kind of like the Yankees in the late 90s. They were destined to win, and no one, no other team, was as good, and if you felt otherwise than you were a moron.
Well Jay, let me hear it? All Patriot fans, let me hear it? “The better team didn’t win”, right? I know what you are going to say. The Broncos scored 24 points, out of 27, off of turnovers. Brady, your beloved pretty boy quarterback, threw an interception in the Bronco’s END ZONE for crying out loud. Hey, I like Brady. He says the right things, isn’t self centered like a lot of superstars, and wins a lot. Kind of like Derek Jeter. But the Patriots lost last night, and nothing you say or do is going to change that. And sorry to say this, but the better team did, in fact, win.
Personally, I would like to see the Colts win it all. I like Payton Manning. And there is no team from the NFC I like. If Denver wins next week, or the Steelers win today, then I’ll probably go for the AFC team anyway, just because I watch AFC games more often. But to all the Patriot fans out there, you know how you feel right now, this morning or late last night, well, think about being a Yankee fan in 2002 losing to the Angels. Hopefully your team will win it again much sooner than the Yanks though.

PS. I was going to write something really sarcastic about it all being a dream, that there is no way that the Pats lost in the post season. Something about seeing into the future and they were like 84-0 in post season play, how Belichick was being kept alive on some futuristic machine where all they had on the sideline was his head and he was still calling the plays, how Tom Brady Jr. was the quarterback, and that last night the Broncos didn’t listen to WEEI and forgot they were suppose to lose so in a show of solidarity with all Patriot fans they ran the ball into their OWN end zone, thus giving the Patriots a 28-27 victory. But I didn’t write that. I was going to say something about how the Broncos would be kicked out of the league for trying to actually win because this was the Patriots after all and how dare any other team win in the post season, don’t they know that not a single team is as good as the Pats. Morons. Idiots. Jerks for thinking they had the right to win when Lord Belichick and Sir Brady were still in charge. But I didn’t write that. I took the high road and made fun of the fans instead.
