Pink Floyd's Rick Wright
As some of you know…actually, most of the two people who read this have no idea…I love Pink Floyd. My eldest sister, who would probably deny this, brought Pink Floyd The Wall home when I was in fourth grade and after listening, I was hooked. Pink Floyd is my favorite band, at the least they are top 3, and earlier this week one of the founding members died. Rick Wright was the keyboardist who also sang and wrote songs. For the few who follow the band, they have had a rough go of it, with a falling out between the two leading members, David Gilmour and Roger Waters. Rick had his own issues with Roger. Band stuff I guess.
I’ve seen the group in concert probably half a dozen times (seeing Roger Waters solo another 5). Great group, named after U.S. bluesmen Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.
Anyway, Rick Wright died after a short bought of cancer. Sad for anyone, sadder for Pink Floyd fans.
Quick write up here.

Cowboy Junkies
I saw the Cowboy Junkies at some small place in NYC in, oh, I don't know, late 80s, maybe 1990. I was with my friend Jeff and some other people and they brought out Tony Bennett to sing a song, totally out of the blue, it was strange. I actually think it was a Bennett cover that the Cowboy Junkies did. They are most known for a cover of Velvet Underground's Sweet Jane and I think are one of the most under appreciated groups of my time. Misguided Angel is still one of my favorite songs of all time. It would make my top ten list of deserted island songs. Outstanding lyrics with soulful female vocals.
I tried to find a good video of the song I like on YouTube, and I came across the music video, a duet with Natalie Merchant, and the Cowboy Junkies doing it live for some TV event. Plus coffee shop remakes. And some homemade picture montages. Ugh. Below is a 40 second clip of the song that I think most accurately captures the song Misguided Angel. Below that is a video for Sweet Jane.

MacBook Air commercial song
I was talking about this song the other day over dinner with friends. It's the backdrop to an Apple commercial for a pretty cool looking laptop.

David Gray
Me: I think David Gray is completely underrated as a musician. People have no idea how good he really is.
Colleague: Who is David Gray?
Me: EXACTLY!!

Fiona Apple
Fiona Apple just came out with a new album. CD actually, I mean it might be available in vinyl but I doubt it. Anyway, she came out with a new album and for the first time in years I might buy a CD. I love Fiona Apple. I listened to clips on iTunes but it’s hard to gauge if the songs are any good because they play only a few seconds of each one. I saw Fiona Apple in concert years ago with Patti in a really small outdoor arena in a suburb in Fort Lauderdale. It was before we had kids and we used to go to Fort Lauderdale about once every other month for the weekend. We went out to dinner and then went to the concert. It poured the entire time and we bought ponchos and still got soaking wet and drank bottled beer and it was one of the happiest times of my life.
Just thought I’d share.

Cyndi Lauper
I got back to my hotel room last night around 11:15 and turned on the TV. For some strange reason, PBS-Orlando had a recent Cyndi Lauper concert on. Sitting there for 15 minutes, I realized I was glued to the TV. And I also found myself strangely attracted to her. To Cyndi Lauper. And I am not sure why. When she was popular in the 80s, I kind of liked her but was more into Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead and new age stuff like Depeche Mode and Erasure. She was more pop like Culture Club and the Thompson Twins (remember them? Hold Me Now, Doctor Doctor, Lay Your Hands On Me. Totally underrated and under appreciated. Good stuff). Good music but nothing I really got into much.
So there I was, watching her concert and totally fascinated. She was in the middle of some song that seemed like it was recent. I have no idea if she has a new album or not, but it was definitely not 80s stuff. Then she did Money Changes Everything, followed by Girls Just Want To Have Fun, a home run with the ladies in the crowd, and closed with Time After Time. The cool thing was she looked good in a kind of nice suit outfit and her hair was very modern and adult. She didnt look like Debbie Harry in her comeback nonsense. She really looked good and put on a pretty cool stage show. She was jumping around and getting into things. She still sings most of her songs like she is shouting, but her voice sounded great. I guess I missed the other classics like She Bop and True Colors but actually stayed up to watch the ending even though I had to get up at 4:30 this morning. As I was watching the crowd and thinking to myself that they were a bunch of 30 and 40-something year old geeks awkwardly dancing and clapping hands, I realized they all looked like me, like my friends, like my neighbors and siblings. They were casually dressed with conservative hair cuts and looked like they all had small children at home being watched by relatives or nervous baby sitters from the neighborhood.
Anyway, it was a good time and she put on a good show. It wasnt Ray Charles or anything, but worth watching.

REO Speedwagon
REO Speedwagon came out with an album called <a href="http://www.sonymusicstore.com/store/catalog/MerchandiseDetails.jsp?merchId=686">'You Can Tune A Piano But You Can't Tuna Fish'</a>. How do I know this? Because I have it. While going through some boxes the other night, I came across it with a number of other groovy albums.
