Jason Varitek

Is Jason Varitek the captain of the Red Sox? Hmm. Not sure. I think I read somewhere he was, but I can’t be certain. He DOES have a big ‘C’ on his jersey, but I’m not sure what that stands for. At first I thought it stood for Catcher, but no one else on the team has his position on his jersey. It could stand for Catfish, or Closer, or Cotton Candy, maybe Cool or Crusader, or it could stand for Cobweb, Corn, Chow, Clown or Crow. I would say it stands for Captain, but Derek Jeter, the captain of the NY Yankees, doesn’t have a big C on his jersey. But then again, Jeter doesn’t have his name on the back like the Red Sox so maybe that’s not a good barometer.

So I will assume Varitek is the captain, especially since he wears a Captain Stubing hat when walking around the clubhouse.

So he got hurt. To be totally honest, I hate to see professional athletes get hurt. As much as I don’t like Jason Varitek, and trust me, I do not like him, he makes his living as a professional baseball player and I hate to see someone get hurt, especially a knee injury for a catcher. I like his 250 batting average though. But for a player to get hurt is not good. I would just rather them implode and get run out of Boston on a rail like Edgar Renteria. That was a great moment in Red Sox history.

Jason being out is going to hurt this club. He is a leader despite this C nonsense. He might be a quiet guy, but I think his leadership comes in ways that the average fan doesn’t see. Plus as bad as his hitting has been, he has the power to do anything.

On a side note, Nixon getting hurt was a blessing. I would rather have Nixon out there then Wily Mo Pena.

But that’s just me.

As for being in first place, we still have a lot of baseball left. A couple of weeks ago the Red Sox had an embarrassing loss and I said something to my friend Chuck, a huge Red Sox fan. His response?

“We’re 3 games in front of you!!”

Being anything other than 12 games up at this point is considered close. I have a feeling the Yanks and Red Sox will go back and forth before it’s all over. And we all know how this will end, don’t we.
