Postseason appearances

First, the Yankees magic number to clinch a playoff spot is 2 as of Monday, Sept 24.

Second, I read over the weekend that the Sox will make their 18th post season appearance. At first, it seemed like such a small number. After all, with the Boston Americans (1901-1907) and the Boston Red Sox (1908-2007), the team has been around for...hey Red Sox fans stop hurting yourself I'll provide the answer...for over 100 years.

Meanwhile, the Yankees, assuming they will make the playoffs, will appear in their 47th post season.

Quick stats from www.baseball-reference.com.

Yanks.

Since the Yankees were a team in 1913, including 2007, 26 World Series rings, 39 Pennants and 47 playoff appearances.

Red Sox

Since 1901 as the Boston Americans, including 2007, 6 World Series rings, 11 Pennants, 18 playoff appearances.

Impressive stats. The Yankees truly had a 20th century dynasty. How do they look in the 21st century now that we are almost 7 years into it? :P

Is 2000 the 21st Century? I think so. Maybe not, although they celebrated 1999 as the end of the 209th century.

If it is...

Yanks - 3 pennants, 1 World Series, 8 playoff appearances.

Sox - 1 pennant, 1 World Series, 3 playoff appearances

Hah - wishful thinking. The 21st Century starts in 2001 and there is really only one category in post season that matters to Steinbrenner. :-)
