Papelbon's comments and the All Star Game

If I needed another excuse to hate that moron Papelbon and his stupid drunk college kid antics that I hate and hope little kids don’t look up to him. And his dumb stare that he said he does to intimidate batters but instead looks like my 3 year old when I won’t let him climb on top of the armoire. Now he goes against the tide and talks trash about Mariano Rivera, the closer for the NY Yankees.

From today’s Daily News, you can read the article here

Talking about him and Francona…

“We've both earned that right; us, by winning the World Series and having the opportunity of having our manager there and our team being represented, and Mariano by what he's done for this role, we're in Yankee Stadium and blah, blah, blah," Papelbon said. "It's not that easy. Everybody thinks it's a cut and dry answer, but it's not."

So blah blah blah because you won the World Series last year blah blah blah you deserve the right to close blah so why shouldn’t every single person blah blah on the Red Sox blah blah start and finish blah blah the All Star Game?? Huh Einstein? If you earned the right by winning the World Series, then every member of the Red Sox should be on the All Star team? Right? Well, maybe they didn’t discuss this at your MENSA meeting but THAT IS NOT HOW IT WORKS!!! You freakin idiot. It is based on who is the best player THIS year. Rivera is 23 for 23 in save situations with no blown saves. Papelbon has 28 saves with 4 blown. Rivera’s ERA is 1.06 and Paps is 2.43. I am not as bright as Papelbon, so tell me how he deserves it more? Because he won a World Series last year. Hmm, ok. Makes sense.

On a related topic, I am one of only a handful of people who does not like the Home Run Derby. In fact, I hate it. I tuned in last night to watch Hamilton hit them all over the place in that one round. And you know what, I was bored. Great, he can hit a soft pitch from an old guy throwing batting practice. HE’S SUPPOSED TO DO THAT. He’s a major league hitter. What’s the big deal. You wheel out some corpse to throw BP and let a guy with Popeye like forearms hit it all over the place. Big freakin deal. Honestly, I was bored to death by it. And to hear Boomer say “back back back back back back back” over and over made me throw up in my high ball. Jesus f**king Christ it was awful. And you know why the older more experienced players don’t do it, because it hurts their hitting rhythm. It throws them off their normal cadence. Taking huge swings like that, you tire out and could hurt yourself, guys like ARod and Howard don’t want to have anything to do with it.

The All Star game is fine, but not really my thing either. And I love great pitching games. But there is something about it that I just don’t find appealing. Maybe it’s the constant movement of players to get everyone in. Or maybe the great pitching that usually results in a 2-1 game. Or that it is just usually not an exciting game. But I find it boring as well.

With that said, I am still waiting by my phone for a last minute invite to the game tonight. Don’t think its gonna happen though.

After hearing/reading the Papelbon comments - I was wondering how long it would take you to post your rant. I could virtually see your face getting beet red. Your poor keyboard - it must have been pounded upon while you typed.

Most ballplayers never even heard of MENSA - much less be their poster boy. Yeah - Papelbon is not the brightest bulb in the light fixture - but he is an excellent closer. I don't blame him for stating that he thinks he should be the closer. That's his right. He has absolute confidence in his ability - and that is what you want in an athlete.

Re: who should be in the All-Star game - as you know - it is not always about the ballplayers who are having the best current year. Time and time again that is not necessarily the case (can you say "Varitek"?)

So - Paps thinks he should be the closer because of what he did last year and this year. I can understand his logic. But I do not agree with it. He is young and hopefully will "get it" over time. Tito Francona will do the right thing and make Rivera the closer tonight. Terry probably heard of MENSA - and he may even have tried the sample test on their website.
Rivera certainly deserves to close - and not just because the game is at The Stadium.

Re: Papelbon's stare... I love it. There is a guy here at work who can imitate it right down to the deep breath prior to the stare. Never fails to make me laugh.

I was talking to Tim the Mailman and he mentioned an article about Papelbon in the Herald. It paints a much different picture than the Daily News article.

Now I love Papelbon and he is so wonderful and such a respectful young man I want to date him myself
