Red Sox and Yankee Caps

As some of you know, I wear Red Sox baseball caps. Or lids. I have plenty of Yankee hats but while in Boston, I wear the big B. I do this for two reasons. One, its to wear the scalp of my enemy and not be a typical obnoxious loud mouth jerk of a Yankee fan. The second is because I love the way they fit. When I am in NY, I wear my Yankee cap but at times I'll wear my Sox hat. It depends on what I am doing I guess. Call me a weak Yankees fan, but most will understand why I do this.

Earlier tonight I got this email from my buddy Rich, a very reasonable but dedicated Red Sox fan. Rich and I go back a few years and have had some good debates on life as a Yankee and Sox fan.

From Rich...

Just thought that I would share with you -

I finally broke down and bought a Yankees hat. Everybody in my family, including my neighbors, think I am nuts. The looks on their respective faces when they first saw me wearing it was priceless. Even my wife (name deleted to protect the innocent), who doesn't care the least about baseball, and even went to sleep hours before the Sox finally won the World Series, told me to take the stupid hat off.

But so far the results have been o.k.

Just prior to purchasing the hat on Friday morning - the Yankees had won 4 straight and the Sox had lost 4 straight. Assuming the Yanks win tonight (they currently have a ridiculous 12-2 lead right now) - they will have gone 3-3 since the purchase while the Sox have gone 4-1.

Still, something doesn't feel right. I feel like I am committing blasphemy before the baseball gods and will soon rue the day. In the meantime - I will keep wearing the hat. Funny thing - out of all of my baseball hats (Sox, Pats, Stoneham teams, BBH, etc) - the Yankees hat fits (and feels) the best.

Post season is going to be fun. I hope the Sox and Yanks are able to square off again.

--Rich

If you'll remember, I became a Red Sox fan for a while and things turned bad for Boston. It was great except for the same blaesphemy that Rich mentioned. It felt...dirty. So I went back to my old ways, results be damned.

Rich, it's fine to wear the Yanks cap in the safe confines of the suburbs, but try wearing it at Fenway an hour before a game. Better yet, save your health and good looks from a beatin' most drunk Sox fans will give you and take the cap off now while the Yankees still have a slim chance.

oh, Rich, Rich, Rich. I can only think of one use for a NY hat and I would prefer not to immortalize it in David's blog. Almost as unimaginable as David donating 35 dollars to Moveon.org

Barry

Ha. Moveon.org.
