minnesota trip
Friday I left for a quick trip to Minnesota for my cousin's baby shower. Kara is due in June with her first baby. On Friday morning I finished packing and getting ready to go while taking care of the kids and then bringing all three to Emily's dance class, David took a couple important calls. (Just a tiny bit of sarcasm there, David's work is very important and keeps us in the luxurious lifestyle we enjoy so I do not mock it, just point out how much better women are at multi-tasking.)
David and the kids dropped Emerson and I off at the airport and although I still had the one with me I felt pretty light. No sippy cups, toys, books or kid snacks in my one bag. Very nice. Emerson slept in the Bjorn while I checked in, but then I had to take him out while I went through security (very annoying!!), I mean who knows I could have been smuggling a machine gun or machete in the Bjorn along with the baby. Thankfully he went back to sleep. Actually, he slept the whole way there!!! I hadn't taken a book with me because I was sure he wouldn't sleep, that was what I thought my luck would be. But after such a good start I decided to buy a book at the airport and it was a good move, I got to read...for 2 whole hours uninterupted. It was a great flight. David used his Delta miles to book first class flights for my mom and I. He's awesome. So I had a sleeping child, a comfortable seat, a book and a glass of wine. It doesn't get much better than that.
When I get in my mom is waiting for me and we get coffee and go to baggage claim for my suitcase and carseat. I check-in with David to tell him how great the flight was and find out things aren't going so well on his end, Ethan is giving him a hard time. I try not to feel bad for him or guilty about being away but not successfully. There isn't anything I can do to help from where I am so I decide I am not going to worry, David is completely capable of handling the kids and his parents were coming up to help. Well it didn't get much better for them. David told me Ethan had a slight fever and threw up, he cried every time David was out of sight (my poor in-laws) and he didn't sleep well. So- this stinks. What can I do but try to enjoy my little break.
The shower was really nice and it was great to see my family. Everyone fussed and fawned over Emerson and we had a wonderful visit. All to soon it was time to come home. I was a little worried that since I had had it so easy on the way out that I was going to pay on the trip back, but no. Emerson slept the whole car ride from Duluth to the cities and most of the flight too. Excellent. When I get into Boston I call home expecting to hear my in-laws crying begging me to defy all traffic laws and get home in a hurry my children are driving them to drink, but again I am blessed. They are not having a bad time of it. When David left they distracted Ethan. When he realized David was gone and asked for him they told Ethan David had gone to work and--presto-- no tantrum, no crying. Ethan was asleep when I got home and all is well. Excellent. They raised three well-adjusted children and know a thing or two... they can handle even my little out-law (he gets that bad streak from Larry after all).
My in-laws left this morning, and David is on his way home. So life can get back to normal...whatever that is.
Thanks Larry and Donna for your help! We appreciate it.
P.S. Emily was an angel while I was gone.
